Hong Kong is a veritable feast for the eyes. And that means it’s the perfect place to find hidden nooks and crannies to fill your Insta feed with. There are views, buildings, food and people to snap, but here are 7 of the best Hong Kong Instagram spots to add some colour to your Instagram feedback.
Ferry spots on Victoria Harbour
Iconic Victoria Harbour gives you a real sense of the hustle and bustle of HK, whilst also offering some peace and tranquility. The Harbour is always busy, and reinforces the hub of commerce and movement that HK is. The Star Ferry is a must do trip – it won’t take you long at all and won’t set you back much either. It also makes for a great Insta snap against a backdrop of skyscrapers.
Aside from the Star Ferry, see if you can locate a junk boat – easily spotted by their pronounced red sail.
A visit at night can also be worthwhile when the building lights fire up. There’s a great range of shots available here at any time of day.
Choi Hung Estate
When you’re scrolling through Instagram, and you’ve search for Hong Kong, chances are you’ve stumbled across this selection of rainbow coloured buildings.
To get here, head to Choi Hung MTR station. You’ll know you’ve arrived as even the MTR signs are rainbows!
From the MTR, it’s a short walk and you’ll need to head to the top of a car park – only a couple of floors. On top of the car park you’ll find these colourful basketball courts, surrounded by light pastel rainbow housing estates. The coloured buildings are in all directions you look, and take a simple, potentially drab estate and turn it into something uplifting and colourful.
I love how something so simple has brought so much colour and joy to the area and think more city planners around the world should look at easy ways to brighten everyone’s day.
Yick Fat Building (Transformers Building)
Another array of colourful buildings, the Yik Fat building is a little different to Choi Hung. The popular Insta photo is from inside the courtyard of the building. It looks innocuous from the street, and you’ll wander into a somewhat dark and dank courtyard. Look up and you’ll be surrounded by a different shade of colour.
This building was made famous in Transformers, so if you happen to get lost, simply ask a local for the Transformers building. They’ll know what you’re looking for. Tai Koo station is your nearest MTR station.
Graham Street
One of the oldest markets in Hong Kong, you’ll find Graham Street a short walk from Central Station. There’s a buzz of shopfronts and commerce that has been occurring here for longer than most of us have been around.
Aside from the markets, there are also a smattering of murals that can pretty up your Insta.
The Peak
A diverse metropolis such as HK means that you can inspire awe simple by taking a different vantage. The Peak affords a stunning view from Hong Kong Island. On a clear day, you’ll be able to see hundreds upon hundred of skyscrapers. The steep funicular that takes you up gives you some idea of just how tall some of these are.
Aside from the various entertainment, shopping and eating options on top of the Peak, the views here are really what makes this a great spot to take in Hong Kong. Aim for your visit on a clear day for maximum impact.
Nan Lien Garden
Hustle. Bustle. Busyness. Madness. All words often associated with Hong Kong, and not necessarily negatively. But a respite from it all can be nice, and the Nan Lien Garden offers exactly that. It’s free to enter, and you get the chance to sit in tranquility whilst being surrounded by skyscrapers. There are many angles that make for Insta-goodness, enjoy finding yours!
The MTR
Well probably not one place and not necessarily stunning. However, the MTR colour coding makes for a wonderful collection of places. As you whizz by each station, it’s a great place to see what the next station’s unique colour will be. If you like collecting things like I do, have a crack at snapping all of your MTR stops!
