Opened in 2017, Macq01 is the new hotel in town. Pick up any travel guide and despite its infancy, you’ll likely see a stay at Macq01 highly recommended for a visit to Hobart. It has quickly made its mark on the Hobart accommodation scene, and it’s easy to see why.
It quickly becomes apparent that the high praise is justified. Located on the Hobart waterfront, there is a sense of both tranquility and history about the property.
A story hotel
Macq01 calls itself a ‘story hotel’ where each room has its own character. Characters are based on Tasmanians of note, and you’ll hear them nattering to you in the lift (not hyperbole!). In your room, you’ll learn more about your character, complete with artefacts important to your character. It adds a unique charm and slice of local history like no other hotel I’ve been to.
Views aplenty
Our stay at Macq01 overlooked the harbour, and if we’re being completely honest, you’d be losing out if you’re not waterside. A small balcony allows you the ability to soak up the cool Hobart air, with views to Mount Wellington/Kinakunya.
So much more room than the average hotel
The room is incredibly large. Something you’d be unlikely to see in a major city for a similarly central location. A real treat was the open wardrobe. More walk past than walk in, it meant the living space didn’t need to be littered with bags aplenty.
The bathroom was equally proportionate, with double basins, a tub and a shower that could fit a basketball team.
As impressive as the space was, the bed was the final complementary aspect. A king sized bed with lush pillows and a delightful mattress which made for a great night’s sleep.
Unfortunately the popularity of the hotel also meant that the hotel’s dining option is also a key attraction around Hobart. Unable to secure a reasonable booking, we had to head further afield to Salamanca for dinner. Not a complaint as the walk through the docks is an incredibly pleasant one.
Well located, fantastic rooms and a dash of character, Macq01 is an easy pick for your next stay in Hobart. And if you’re looking at ways to spend your time in Tasmania out of Hobart, check out these great stops on driving the Tassie coast.
