Looking for some fun in the Sunshine Coast sun? We’ve got you covered. From markets to beaches and everything in between with some great free things to do on the Sunshine Coast.

Where is the Sunshine Coast?

The stunning Sunshine Coast is located in South East Queensland, just north of Brisbane. This region has 60km of coastline and spans into stunning, lush hinterland. It starts from Caloundra in the south, up to the Great Sandy National Park in the north. With that much ground to cover, you can bet that there are plenty of places to enjoy free things to do on the Sunshine Coast.

Some of the most popular coastal towns on the Sunshine Coast include Noosa, Mooloolaba and Maroochydore. In the hinterland, Nambour and Maleny are the major centres. However, given its popularity, there are new townships opening up constantly.

When to visit the Sunshine Coast

Despite its name, it’s not always sunny on the Sunshine Coast.  Although the locals might convince you otherwise. Beautiful one day, perfect the next goes the tag line, but there are definitely different versions of perfect.

The busiest time to visit the Sunshine Coast is during summer (December to February), and particularly during the school holidays from Christmas until the end of January. The days are warm and long, and the beaches are buzzing with activity. It’s often really humid during this period as well, so if you’re not a fan of the heat, you may want to avoid this time completely.

The shoulder periods of autumn (March to May) and Spring (September to November) bring a good balance of fairly warm weather and fewer crowds. You’ll probably find accommodation is cheaper at this time too. During autumn the water is still really warm, so a good time for swimming too.

Winter on the Sunshine Coast (June to August) can also be a really busy time, as Aussies in the southern states seek some more warmth and sunshine. However the nights in particular can still get cold, so don’t go thinking you can leave the winter woollies at home! This is the perfect time to do some of the hikes that we’ve listed below.

So once you’ve worked out when to go, what sort of free things on the Sunshine Coast await?

Free things to do on the Sunshine Coast

#1 Visit the Eumundi Markets

The Eumundi Markets are a twice weekly market in – you guessed it – the town of Eumundi. They call themselves “the biggest and the best artisan market in Australia.” From hand-made clothes, homewares, spices and jams, this is a great place to shop locally. However, if you’re after a free activity on the Sunshine Coast, this is a perfect spot for browsing too. With street performers and buskers dotted throughout the market, you’re sure to be entertained as well.

The markets are open on Wednesdays from 8am to 2pm and Saturdays from 7am to 2pm. Check the Eumundi Markets website for up to date details.

#2 Get a photo in front of the Big Pineapple

Visiting a “big thing” is a quintessential part of an Aussie road trip. These giant structures can be found all across the country. They generally represent what an area if famous for, such as the fruit that is harvested in the area. Or, they can just be some Aussie novelty.

The Big Pineapple is arguably Queensland’s best “big thing”. It’s situated in the town of Woombye, along the Nambour Connection Road. At 16 metres high, it’s hard to miss.

The great news is you can visit for free! Pull up in the parking lot and get a photo in front of the Big Pineapple.

#3 Stroll along the Mooloolaba boardwalk

With over 60km of coastline, it’s a good bet you’re going to find some amazing coastal walks. The boardwalk along Mooloolaba is one of my absolute favourites.

The Sunshine Coast Council has been upgrading the foreshore along Mooloolaba for a few years. Towards the north there is an incredible viewing platform at Alex Bluff Foreshore Park. Here you can take in views of Point Cartwright and Mooloolaba Beach.

Towards the south, I love the pram friendly section at the Spit. At 3.4 metres wide and surrounded by trees it provides a pleasant area for a family stroll.

#4 Head to one (or more) of the 30+ beaches

With a reputation for sun, sea and surf, it’s no surprise you’re going to find a lot of beaches along the Sunshine Coast. There are in fact, more than 30! As a fun and free thing to do on the Sunshine Coast, why not try and tick off all them?

If time is not up your sleeve, make a beeline to the best beaches on offer. According to Tripadvisor, the number 1 beach on the Sunshine Coast is Mooloolaba Beach. This is my favourite too. Other fantastic beaches to check out include Noosa Main Beach and King’s Beach in Caloundra.

Like all of Australia, there are patrolled and unpatrolled beaches along the coast. If you fancy a dip, find a patrolled beach and swim between the flags!

#5 Have a picnic at Mary Cairncross Reserve

The Mary Cairncross Reserve hosts a subtropical rainforest with some stunning views across to the Glass House Mountains. Pack a picnic before you leave home and you can dine outside on the lovely grounds. Afterwards, head off through the rainforest on one of the walking tracks. There are suitable options for those with a stroller too.

It is free entry into the Mary Caincross Reserve, although a gold coin donation is appreciated. Check the website for opening times.

#6 Browse the cute shops in Montville

There’s no better place for window shopping on the Sunshine Coast than Montville. This picture perfect town in the hinterland has a main street full of cute shops. Head to the Clock Shop which is housed in a European inspired chalet. Have a browse through an art gallery and an antique store. If you’re out and about with kids, they’ll love the puzzle and games shop.

Before you head out, check out this list of Montville shops to make sure you tick off all the best ones.

#7 Walk around Chambers Island

Chambers Island is a local’s hidden gem. Located in Maroochydore, in the middle of the Maroochy River, this tiny island feels a world away from the tourist heavy beaches. With a footbridge over from the mainland, this spot is super accessible. It’s a great spot to play some water sports and go fishing. There’s a little playground for the kids and some picnic benches and BBQ facilities.

#8 Visit Point Cartwright

Located in Buddina, Point Cartwright has a lighthouse and a stunning panoramic view of the coastline. Walk along the coastal track through La Balsa Park, with views across to Mooloolaba. Once you reach the point you can then walk on the beach side looking south. It’s a fantastic spot at sunset and a real favourite amongst Sunshine Coast locals.

#9 Walk through the Buderim Forest Park

Looking to escape the heat with a walk through a lush rainforest? Head to Buderim Forest Park. With a well maintained walkway and boardwalk, plus a picturesque bridge, the highlight here is the beautiful waterfall. Look out for the diverse birdlife too.

#10 Visit a weekend market

We know we already had a visit to the Eumundi Markets listed above, but that’s because it deserves its own feature! If you’re on the Sunshine Coast, head out to at least one other market, as it’s a great way to enjoy the region’s vibrant culture and produce. Some of my favourites include the Caloundra Street Fair and Cotton Tree Markets. If you’re lucky, you might even spot our niece who regularly busks at these markets!

#11 Visit the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Garden

If you’re looking to enjoy some native flora and fauna, head to the botanic gardens in Tanawha. Here you’ll find 82 hectares of beautiful gardens. You could take a self-guided tour on one of the walks through the gardens, and view the sculptures spread throughout. Pack a picnic to make the most of the peaceful atmosphere and this free day out on the Sunshine Coast.

The gardens are open from 7am to 5pm (April to October) and 7am to 6pm (November to March).

#12 Walk the Noosa National Park Coastal Track

This stunning coastal track in Noosa takes you right along the coastline, offering breathtaking views out across the ocean. There’s a well maintained path that is pram and wheelchair friendly. Head there at sunrise to avoid the crowds.

#13 Go for a swim at Lake Currimundi

Another one of the local favourites, a visit to Lake Currimundi is a fantastic free thing to do on the Sunshine Coast. The waters here are very calm, so it’s a great spot to visit with kids, or to go kayaking or stand up paddleboarding.

#14 Hike up Mount Coolum

If you really want to get your heart racing, take a hike up to the top of Mount Coolum. Here you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Sunshine Coast, all for free! Mount Coolum is a 25 million year old vocanic dome, with some of the best views of the coast. A word of warning though – it’s a challenging walk and should only be attempted by those that are reasonably fit.

#15 Visit the local library

If you’re a local looking for something free to do, particularly on a rainy day, head to one of the local libraries. They’re free to join and often have free events and activities too. Click here to find out if there is anything interesting for you to attend. If you have young kids, the Storytime events are fantastic.

#16 Free community events

Make sure to keep an eye out for some of the free community events that pop up throughout the year on the Sunshine Coast. These local events often showcase local talent and cuisine. Have a search through Facebook events or check out the local Facebook groups.

We hope you enjoy your time visiting the beautiful region of the Sunshine Coast.
